Finally saw Ginger Snaps, the movie Silas has been evangelizing for ages, and by god it’s a really great movie. It’s not the most astonishingly groundbreaking piece of cinema in the world, but it’s really well put together, and it has perhaps the greatest opening credits scenes ever, I was laughing and breathless with the awesomeness. Anyway, it’s a werewolf movie, and it made me realize how the lycanthrope myth just begs to be cast in a girls coming-of-age / menstruation aversion / woman’s empowerment and sexuality angle. Animalistic transformation, sprouting body hair, unleashed uncontrolled desires and shedding blood on the lunar cycle? DUH. I can’t believe I’ve never seen the werewolf thing done up this way before, it’s just so obvious. Maybe I just don’t watch enough movies featuring hot and homicidal 15 year old chicks.
In other news, walking out of Central Square1369 it was breezy and 40-something degrees and I mark this day as the first sign of Spring, the first day the wind isn’t bitter edged sharp cold, the air is just slightly thicker with the hint of warm afternoons in clothes unlayered, the subtle herald whispering promises of a Mother Nature who’s not trying to kill you.
