every last rat bastard one of them
Apr. 5th, 2005 01:47 pmSin City is just about everything I hoped for, the translation of Frank Miller’s vision, the black and white panels given motion, the printed words given voice. Rapt, mesmerized, enthralled, I lost count of the times I thought “Oh my god...thank you thank you thank you thank you”.
There are a couple niggling shortcomings, barely worthy of mention: 1) We don’t see Nancy Callahan’s tits and 2) When the girls of Old Town are firing down into the alley at Wallenquists’s gang, they’re waving their guns around like jewelry, not like automatic weapons. I don’t mind the guns that much, even in the books we get the impression that the Old Town girls are more like crazy dames with guns than avenging valkyries. The lack of Nancy Callahan’s tits is a bit more noticeable, it would have been more dramatic to see the skinny little 11-year old kid turn into a real woman with a deadly curves, boffo titties, a wild west lariat and plenty of skill with all of the above. But whatever.
I think one of the things that’s always drawn me to Sin City is the underlying message that you stand by your friends, you do the right thing, no matter what. Sometimes that means taking a fall, sometimes that means throwing a punch, sometimes that means killing a whole lotta people. You stand up for what’s right, you stand up for your friends, or you ain’t worth a bullet between the eyes.
