At LizzyGoat’s suggestion I went to an Aerial Silk practice in JP; this stuff is really, really, really neat. I learned some basics – getting up and down the silk, one foot binding, some arm stuff – it’s like rock climbing in that you need a certain amount of upper body strength but the more you can use your feet and legs the longer you last. But it’s a lot more about muscular control and flexibility, neither of which I have much of, and to a large degree it’s about how much pain you can take; I had to bail on some things because my feet were hurting in a way that felt wrong, gotta work on that when I go to a real class in a couple weeks. Seeing good-at-it people do the stuff is inspiring and otherworldly, climbing up the fabric yourself is magical and humbling. What I vainly hope, of course, is to someday do a passable imitation of those Cirque Du Soleil dudes, flipping and spinning and rippling down the cascading silk. More likely I’ll do a passable imitation of Wile E. Coyote, my extravagant production gone horribly, ridiculously, painfully awry.
