Went with Sirendipity to Les Miserables for her somewhat-belated birthday present. Les Miserables is the only play I’ve seen on the real live Broadway, this was like 12 years ago and it remains one of my most magical memories, one of the first times I realized how the power of theatre and music can sweep you away from everything else in the world. This time in Boston I wasn’t as overwhelmed, probably because I’ve seen a good deal more theatre, hey after a dozen years I’d hope I’m a tougher audience than that wide-eyed kid in the big city for the first time. And not all the performers were outstanding; Marius’ voice was a bit weak, Eponine’s pronunciation was terrible - she had a wonderful voice when she opened up on those long vowels but otherwise she had the weirdest, most distracting pronunciation ever. Valjean wasn’t doing it for me at the beginning but by intermission I’d warmed up to him, Javert was excellent and the head student-leader dude’s voice was great, he really was the quintessential heroic young revolutionary.

Do only commercial vehicles get all-numeral license plates, or can I get a vanity plate that reads 24601?

Took LaBelleMargeaux to Ruth’s Chris steak house for her advance birthday dinner; I’ve been seeing ads for Ruth’s Chris in every in-flight magazine on every damn airplane flight I’ve ever been on so when they opened up one in Boston of course I had to try it. The place ain’t cheap, but it’s truly one of the most magnificent steak experiences I’ve ever had. Flawless ingredients, everything is cooked perfectly; the asparagus cooked just right, lyonnaise potatoes the perfect crispness, and Margeaux had a crabcake with her steak and oh my god it was the best crabcake I’ve ever had – yeah unexpected in a place that pushes the meat meat meat but I’m not kidding something about this crabcake made both of us stop chewing, look at each other and go holy crap this is a freakin amazing crabcake. Our meats were petit filets, thick, rare, buttery, scrumptious. And the service is outstanding; the waitstaff are everpresently attentive without being intrusive, their tableside manner make you feel special without being intimidatingly formal or stuffy. Yup, totally awesome. I think this place and L’Espalier top my list of restaurants where you’re going to spend a bit of money but the quality, execution and attention to detail make everything feel totally worth it.

Couplingchaos gets back from saying goodbye to grandma in Texas, I picks her up and we were going to go climbing but we bag that plan for instead watching Sex & The City, Six Feet Under and this curious little movie Photographic Fairies, from which there are two important lessons: be careful with the faerie psychotropics and do not mess with Ben Kingsly he will fuck your shit up. Come to think of it, those are both pretty much common sense.
