First day of my Great Roadtrip Adventure 2008. Good driving, no traffic whatsoever, crossed easy over the George Washington bridge, somewhat surprisingly; last time I came this way the bridge was an hour plus of pure pain. Anyhow, smooth sailing.

My youngest niece had mailed me a letter in which was folded a paper cutout of a boy, this thing titled Flat Stanley. Apparently I’m supposed to take a picture of Flat Stanley at my house, in the city I live, whatever. I’m going to take Flat Stanley along with me across the country and back. It’s a cute concept, I guess. Not entirely sure what my sister and niece are going to think about the pictures, I hope they like them.

Roadfood: Got lunch at the Merritt Canteen in Bridgeport CT. They do a lot of hot dogs, I got a Red Hot, which is a 1/4lb spicy chorizo-like dog, with mustard. onions, kraut, and relish. I’ve never had a Red Hot before, it’s really, really good – the spicy is immediately noticeable, but it comes with all kinds of flavor, kinda portuguesey, but not heavy or oily like a mouthful of chorizo can be, it’s balanced, and enhanced by the hotdog toppings. One of the best dogs I ever had, fer sure.

Gina and her family receive me into their home with warm Filipino hospitality. I stand by and drink their beer while she roasts a chicken for the Christmas dinner. It’s neat to be around big families (Gina’s got three brothers) there’s a dynamic you don’t see anywhere else, it’s interesting and cool. Specially when the sibs range in age fifteen years or more, there’s this thing…they’re this gang, definitely very different people, but with this unconscious, effortless, bond you know will always be there. If you’re an only child or have just one sibling, you might be a bit envious of it.
