Things That Make You Go “Hurm”
Mar. 9th, 2009 11:50 amDoes anyone here not read comics, never read comics and doesn’t really care about superheroes? For that person, I wonder how it feels that for the past 8 years that all these comic based movies keep coming out and everyone’s so excited about them. Do you find them interesting, entertaining, powerful; even though you have no connection to the complex backstories? I think Watchmen is the ultimate example of that. All us comic geeks are SO invested in that book, it changed the way we think about what comics could be, in some ways changed the way we look at the world. If you haven’t pored over the book, marveled at it’s structure, it’s execution, it’s towering accomplishment - is there any way you could really get the movie? I think Watchmen is kinda our Passion of The Christ.

OMG BIG BLUE WANG.
Phew, got that out of my system. Ok. One of the things I thought they’d have the most trouble with was conveying the sense of alternate history. All through the book they drop scenes and atmosphere and events that show in a subtle yet powerful way how the world is not like ours. It’s a much more cynical and dark future. It’s much more oppressive, not because the government has instituted martial law or anything, but you can tell the civil rights movement and idealism of the 1960s never really caught on, and as a result the spirit of America is much duller, palpably bleak. It’s handled in so many small yet significant scenes and dialogue snippets, I didn’t think they’d be able to do it justice in the movie. But oh god they do. They nailed it in the opening credits, fer chrissake. It’s amazing, almost the most impressive part of the movie, for me.
They got Rorschach, totally. That actor is amazing. His gravelley voice is perfect, and he conveys so much emotion through it, makes Christian Bale’s Batman look stupid.
Dr. Manhattan’s voice was pitched a little higher than I expected, but it worked really well, I like it better that what I’d had in mind.
In the previews I thought Ozymandias was way too slight and unimpressive for the perfect human specimen he’s supposed to be in the book, but the actor really pulled it off, I think he works better than the book, actually.
Nite Owl and Silk Spectre are much younger and better looking than the book, but it’s not that big a deal to me. It did make for super-hot sex in the owlship, oh my. Unfortunately neither of them are particularly good actors.
