Battle 360
Apr. 8th, 2011 08:50 amBeen watching this Military Channel series Battle 360, about important US naval battles in the WWII pacific. It’s fun and informative, there’s a lot of good CGI illustrated explanations of the battles, interspersed with interviews with pilots and sailors, and commentary from war historians. At times it does get a little rah-rah-USA, which bugs the hell out of me; I mean, if you fail to acknowledge the skill and dedication of your opponent, you are doing a disservice to the whole endeavor. But Battle 360 isn’t the worst I’ve seen in that respect, and it is intended to be the American point of view, after all.
I wonder what my Japanese-American friends think when they watch documentaries like this, seeing Japanese planes and pilots sink American ships, Japanese fighters and bombers crashing into the sea. Do they feel just like most of my other American friends, or is there a twinge of...something else? Personally I know that if, sometime in the next 10 or 20 years, the US and China got into a shooting war, I would feel slightly…conflicted. I can’t put my finger on exactly how or why, but I know I’d feel differently about it than when I see Americans and Arabs killing each other. Funny.
