I spent Halloween weekend out in LA to hang with my mom for her 70th birthday. We go out for a walk in the neighborhood, and coming back to the house mom picks up a plastic water bottle on the ground, and tells me she collects them and turns them in for recycling because you get money for them. “I got seven dollars last time!” Mom owns the house we grew up in free and clear. That plus all the money dad saved, and his retirement 401k, and the small apartment building we own with a couple uncles, mom’s net worth exceeds a couple million dollars. And she’s picking up bottles for the return deposits. That’s just...I don’t know what to say. Mom is great. She is also terrifying behind the wheel. What they say about Asian drivers? Totally true. Cruises right through stop signs without slowing down. Granted, it’s only in the local neighborhood where there’s clear sight lines, but still. Jeezus.
