Poetic license.
Jul. 16th, 2003 07:26 amWhat do you think about people who have those personalized license plates on their cars? Do you think "My god what an insufferable twit" or "Heh that's pretty neat"? I'm conflicted. I want vanity plates because I think they'd make my car look kinda special and different, but I also really dislike calling attention to myself; I've always thought it boorish and infantile to trumpet your name or personal slogan. Sometimes I think only an idiot that would spend $50 on a personalized plate, but then I see one that's really clever and I go "Hey that's cool!" Like my friend whose license plate read MEDUSA.
No, I don't want VAMPYR, DEATH, or GOTHIC. I'm a fanboy but not enough to merit MAUDIB, JEDI, SDF 1 or PLNTRY. NIN, DCD, CRNT93? CURVE, RSPTNA, SGR ROS?
Nah. I've always wanted license plates that read MORTAL. It's a bit of a shout-out to my homie Ivo Watts-Russell1, but mostly I just like the feel of it. Ambiguous, yet somehow meaningful. Almost dark and spooky, but not overtly so. I'll probably never do it, but it's neat to think about.
So, if you were required by law to make up your own license plate, what would you have?
1. If I wanted esoteric indie name-checking I'd do something absurd like 23NVLP. Of course, what 4AD really needs is more gangsta rap. At least a collaboration between Lisa Gerrard and Nelly.
