The JFK Elementary School in Somerville opens their pool for lap swimming in the afternoon, so I bought myself swim suit and goggles (the goggles are Speedo, the suit is not) and did laps for the first time since sixth grade PE. This is all in preparation for my swim across Walden Pond. Initial results are not encouraging. I did 20 laps of the 25-meter pool but I couldn't do more that 3 without stopping to rest. Rest will not be an option in a 100-foot deep glacial pond.

Woke up way way way too early Saturday morning to help move Sirendipity. Following the U-Haul truck along the streets of Medford I thought it's kind of interesting to be part of this caravan, a truck and 4 cars loaded with all of Sirendipity's stuff. It's like, when you move into an apartment you've got all this stuff that quickly becomes absorbed by your home, like hundreds of little roots or tentacles that anchor you to a place. Then when you move, you suck all that stuff back out and put it into a truck and all your stuff is suddenly mobile, that's a little weird. Your furniture and computer and CDs and clothes, does all that stuff wonder where it's going? Your TV is going "Hey! I'm supposed to be stationary! Put me down!" Then you unload everything into your new apartment and all your possessions breath a sigh of relief, they snuggle into the walls and drawers and cabinets and once again you have a sense of place, firm ground.

Done with move, dropped CouplingChaos off in Arlington for the LARPING, home, shower, out to Million Year Picnic where I find, wonder of wonders, there's a new Michael Manning book! I've not had a chance to read it closely, but I think it's a sequel to Spider Garden. The art doesn't look as polished as Spider Garden or Transceptor, which seems a little weird. Whatever, no one does science fiction BDSM omnisexual erotica quite like he does.

I get home and crash for a few hours before heading down to Providence for the Militart Birthday Party, where I quickly get drunk and stay that way till the sun comes up. Crash again, wake up at noon, clean up and go to Newport. There's beastly traffic because of some Japanese culture festival but we get through and spend a few hours in The Marble House which is now my favorite of the mansions down there. It's relatively small but it's so beautifully done inside, not hideously garish like The Breakers. The Marble House is just shy of overwhelming, where The Breakers is an assault on the senses. The audio tour of The Marble House is really cool, they talk a lot about the mistress of the house Alva Vanderbilt, who oversaw every detail of its construction and used the house's prestige and publicity to promote the Women's Suffrage movement. The mansions in Newport are really cool but what's more fascinating are the stories within them and where they fit into the history of America.

We had us a hankerin for some seafood so we went down to the waterfront to this place called Scales and Shells. I love how really really fresh shrimp is almost crunchy. The oysters were large and succulent. On the chalkboard menu was Lobster Fra Diavolo For 2, I saw it served to the table next to us and it's this frightening pile of lobster and mussels and clams on linguini in a huge skillet, you can see the peppers and tomato chunks and smell the garlic and capers and it looked so damn good but prying meat out of lobster chunks was little more effort that we were ready to invest, so we went for the monkfish and salmon with crab-asparagus butter.

Now I'm hungry.
