Hard Drive
Jun. 2nd, 2008 07:39 amThe car hunting continues, I think I like new Acura TSX best, the interior is nice and comfy, roomier than the Lexus, and the engine and chassis feel lighter and more responsive too. The Infiniti G35 blows it away for horsepower, but I really dislike the unpleasant Infiniti clutch. I swear, Acura has figured out how to make the sweetest clutch and shifter, it’s precise and eager and like magic. The Volkswagen GTI feels almost as good, but my long highway commute needs me something bigger. If I wasn’t so infatuated with manual transmissions, I’d probably go with the Infiniti G35x, but then there’s gas mileage - the TSX gets 29MPG highway while the G35 gets 25. Every 1 MPG costs me an extra $250 per year, so that’s like writing an additional check for $1000 every goddamn year, so no thanks.
Seems every generation of cars they find some new place to stuff an airbag. The TSX has two front, two front-side, and two side curtain airbags, the fronts are dual-chamber inflatey something-or-others. Some cars come with low-mounted front airbags to protect your knees. All pretty cool, but it’s getting ridiculous; next they’ll put airbags in the trunk to protect your groceries, and little airbags in the cupholders so your coffee doesn’t spill. How did Sylvester Stallone put it – “All of a sudden, the car turned into a cannoli.”
