Price of Freedom
Oct. 3rd, 2012 08:53 amIf there are any issues that seem to get the most attention of political Left and Right, it’s Abortion Rights and Gun Rights. Each side is outraged when it’s favorite freedom is limited, and at the same time wants to limit the other guy’s pet freedom. I wish, with some magic spell or something, I could make it so the two issues were inextricably linked, so each limitation of one freedom would automatically install an equivalent regulation of the other. Hey you Lefties, want total reproductive freedom - no excuses, no waiting period, no apology? Fine, as long as anyone can purchase a gun, anytime, no age limit or waiting period or background check. You Right-Wingers, love your guns? How much government restriction would you be willing to accept on your firearms, in order to restrict the number of abortions that are carried out in this country?
I guess I just wish more people would realize that whatever you hold dear and central to a decent society is anathema to a lot of other people, for their perfectly valid and personal reasons. And how much compromise would you be willing to accept, in order to get some of what you want?
Personally, I’d allow All the Abortions and All the Guns, All the Time. I call it Pro-Freedom. Some might call it Pro-Death.
