Underwater

I’m getting SCUBA certified, I did my first two pool dives this past weekend. I didn’t really know what to expect, or how much I’d like it, would it be freaky or unpleasant to breathe underwater, would I get frustrated dealing with all the equipment and stuff? I was in the pool four hours Saturday and four hours Sunday and the biggest thought running though my head the whole time was OMG THIS IS SO COOL. I do my first open water dives in the real live ocean this weekend, I’m so excited.

I’m taking the classes through Boston Scuba, it’s not the cheapest of the local schools, but theirs was the only schedule that could get me certified in time for a diving trip week after next. They’re quite convenient, East Boston at the shipyard, next to KO Pies, oh my god I love KO Pies - braised lamb pie with mashed potatoes, gravy, mushy peas on top. Our scuba instructor is really great, he’s a Brit who talks excitably fast, I’d say a little like David Tennant cuz that’s my main British accent reference at the moment. He’s made a couple vague mentions how he’s done HALO jumps, technical dives past 200 feet, and spent a little time in the Falklands. I didn’t notice a Who Dares Wins tattoo or nothing, but nobody does that shit ‘cept for SAS. Man that is so cool. He’s a short guy, fit but not obviously muscular, and you get the sense that he doesn’t want to kill you, but he would if he had to.
